Appearance
While they look like puffy white clouds, these Bichon Frise dogs are actually small rays of sunshine. These small, fluffy, and happy-go-lucky dogs have a sunny disposition, a cheerful personality, and an elegant and graceful demeanor. The Bichon Frise is a small, sturdy-built, hardy dog. It weighs between 10 to 16 pounds and is 10 to 12 inches tall. It also has dark round eyes with an expressive and inquisitive look, black button noses, floppy ears, and fluffy tails curled over their backs. It also has a medium-length coat that is soft and silky and comes in a coat color of white with various combinations of apricot, cream, gray, and buff.
The Bichon Frise is a low-shedding dog and can be classified as a semi-hypoallergenic dog and is ideal for people who have mild pet allergies. It is also a forever-young Bichon Frise dog that never ages and remains puppy-like and playful well into its teen years.
Temperament
The Bichon Frise is a friendly, calm, and gentle lapdog pet companion. He is naturally open to making new friends and getting involved in social events and interactions. He loves to be admired and praised for his looks and behavior. Just like other small breeds of dogs, the Bichon Frise loves to be pampered and spoiled by everyone in the family. He will always find a way to get into the center of attention and get his dose of well-deserved belly rubs and praise for whatever trick or stunt he pulls off.
As far as the family is concerned, the Bichon Frise loves everyone equally and never discriminates between family members. He loves to snuggle up on the couch with his pet parents as much as he loves to play with the family kids. He also loves to get involved in all family activities such as camping, strolling casually in the park, barbeques, and other family vacations. The Bichon Frise is also very fond of canine games and toys that keep him active and entertained physically and mentally.
The charismatic Bichon Frise, though watchful and alert whenever the need arises, is not an aggressive breed of dog. While the Bichon Frise is more than happy to alert unwanted visitors, beyond that, the dog is more likely to cuddle the unwelcome visitor rather than bark or bite them away.
Bichon Frise puppies are extremely intelligent and easy to train. These puppies are attentive, responsive, quick to learn, people-pleasers, and obedient students. Quick, powerful, and robust, these puppies have the potential to be trained for agility, rally, and obedience contests. Their favorite activities include racing around, chasing after the air, cuddling, testing the bark response, and napping in a curl.
History
The Bichon Frise, a Mediterranean breed, was brought into existence during the 13th century on the island of Tenerife, Canary Islands. This lovely breed of dog has been known by other names, namely Bichon Tenerife and Bichon a Poil Frise, and is thought to have descended from a Barbet Dog or Water Spaniel. The Bichon Family, also known as the Barbichon Family, consists of five amazing breeds of Bichon Dogs, namely Bichon Bolognese, Coton de Tulear, Bichon Maltese, Bichon Havanese, and Bichon Frise.
It is thought that during the mid-13th century, European sailors, who often engaged in trade activities in the Canary Islands, fell in love with the fluffy white Bichon Frises and decided to bring them home to Italy, France, and Spain. Upon their arrival, the Bichon Frises won their way into the hearts of European royalty and became their most sought-after pets throughout the European kingdoms. It is said of his Majesty King Henry III of England, “He had no liking for being without his Bichon Dogs, and devised a plan whereby he could take them with him, by placing them in a basket on his chest.”
For many centuries, the Bichon Frise continued to maintain his status as the luxurious pet of the rich and powerful. However, when things took a wrong turn and kingdoms began to crumble, the luxurious pets of the rich and powerful found themselves at a difficult stage where they had to fend for themselves. It turned out that the Bichon was a hardy breed of dogs that had a knack for entertainment and was soon adopted by the performers at the circus. They are highly trainable, amazing performers, elegant, and fun. They are also gorgeous and resilient and were once again received with great popularity.
The Bichon Frises went on to become the most adored companion pet across Europe for many generations. The cherished puppies were named “Bichon a Poil Frise” or “Bichon with curly hair” in France in 1933. In 1950, the Bichon Frise made its way to the United States, and the dog was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1971. The beautiful Bichon Frises even have their own club, the “Bichon Frise Club of America,” which was established in 1964.
The Bichon Frise breed has finally reached the peak of its popularity. Given the fantastic looks and the beautiful personality of the dog, the breed is one of the top choices for the creation of designer crossbreeds. There are several mixes of the Bichon Frise, and some of the popular mixes include:
- Aussiechon
- Cavachon
