Appearance

The Cava Poo or Cavadoodle/Cavoodle is small in stature and has a sweet round face, beautiful big eyes, a button nose, and long adorable floppy ears. The Cavadoodle/Cavoodle also inherited the small stature of both breeds and grows to a height of 9-14 inches and weighs between 8-20 pounds.

The Cavoodle’s coat is hypoallergenic and sheds minimally or not at all and is of various types such as straight, wavy, or curly and comes in beautiful colors and shades. The most common colors of this breed are black, brown, tricolor, white, and yellow. As is the case with almost all hybrid breeds of dogs, the Cavoodle looks like either of the breeds or is a perfect combination of both breeds. However, the Cavalier Spaniel-Poodle hybrid looks a little more like the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a little more like the Poodle in terms of their coat and other qualities.

The colors of the Cavapoo are mostly a combination of the colors of both breeds and include the following:

  • Black
  • Black and white
  • Dark Red
  • White  Cavapoo
  • Apricot
  • Brown
  • Blenheim
  • Golden
  • Merle
  • Blue Merle

Black or white Cavadoodles are also among the most difficult to find. The size of these Cavadoodles also varies a lot depending on the size of their Poodle parent. For a mix of a Poodle and a Cavalier, Mini or Toy Poodles are generally used. An adult Cavapoo may grow to a height of 14 inches and a weight of 20 pounds. These are called Mini Cavapoos or Toy Cavapoos depending on the Poodle parent’s size.

Temperament

The Cava Poos, also called Cavadoodles or Cavoodles, are friendly and loyal dogs. Their friendly and happy nature, along with their non-aggressive attitude, has made them a highly popular dog breed. The temperament of these dogs is even and calm, and perhaps this is what makes them the most lovable feature of these beautiful-looking creatures – apart from their beautiful looks, of course! These dogs neither bite nor growl; they are neither nervous nor afraid of anything or anyone; and they love everyone they come across!

The Cavadoodles are relaxed, elegant, and balanced dogs who are simply amazing with children of all ages, pets, other dogs, and even strangers! Their favorite activities include going for a walk and meeting new people, exploring new territories and new friends, meeting new friends at the dog park, playing dog games with their human families, and much more! With their happy nature, love for playing games, and their wild side, the Cavoodles are sure to make everyone laugh and enjoy their company for hours!

They also enjoy an occasional dog trick or stunt and are quite fond of being the center of attention. These sweet and caring pups are devoted and family-oriented and enjoy participating in all activities with their human families. Even though they attach themselves greatly to their human families, they are not clingy or overly dependent on their masters or families. This designer dog is known for being independent, and in most cases, they can be left alone for 8 hours a day.

As they are also quite athletic and enjoy being outdoors, Cavadoodles also make great hiking buddies. Even though they are toy-sized and are not built for mountain climbing or hiking, the Cavipoo does enjoy participating in these activities with their human families.

Care

Grooming

Grooming of your Cavapoo puppy at home and at a dog groomer is a vital activity for your pet. Cavapoos and Cavapoo puppies are known to be low-maintenance pets when it comes to grooming. Just like any other breed of dogs, Cavapoos need brushing of their coat, cleaning of their ears, cutting of their nails, and brushing of their teeth.

When brushing your Cavapoo puppy’s coat, consider the type of hair your Cavapoo has and the brush type that is best for brushing the coat. Cavoodles are known to have wavy or curly hair types. Therefore, a bristle brush would be the best brush type for your Cavapoo puppy. It would be best to brush your Cavapoo puppy at least three times a week. However, brushing your Cavapoo puppy every day would be even better. It would also be wise to add a slicker brush for your Cavapoo puppy to your shopping list, especially if your Cavapoo puppy has a tendency to get matted. Cavapoos that are not brushed sufficiently are likely to get matted. Mats are likely to develop at the back of the ear, the legs, and the base of the tail.

Cutting your dog’s hair is also one of the things that you need to do on a regular basis, especially during summer. There are many popular styles of haircuts that your groomer can do for your dog or that you can do at home with the right tools. Your favorite styles of haircuts for this breed of dog are the Teddy Bear Cut, Summer Cut, and Puppy Cut.

Bathing your Cavalier spaniel and Poodle mix is not something that you should do often. It is recommended that one bath per 4 to 6 weeks is enough. Bathing your Cavadoodles too often is not good for them. Bathing your dog too often can cause dryness of the skin since it can strip away the natural oils that are already on your pet’s skin. Dog shampoo is recommended when bathing your Cavadoodles. You can use mild shampoo for dogs if you are going to bathe your pet at home or let the groomer choose the shampoo that is right for your pet.

Most dogs do not have the patience to sit and stay while the owners work on giving them a pedicure. This is the reason why it is always recommended to start the pedicure as early as possible, while the puppies are young. Overgrown nails not only cause discomfort to the dogs, but they also cause pain and deformity. However, if you want to clip the nails of your dogs yourself, you should make sure to buy nail clippers for dogs. A good time to clip the nails of your dogs is after their monthly bath. This is the time when the nails of the dogs are soft and easier to clip.

Ear cleaning is also necessary for the health of the dogs. However, it is not necessary to do it every day. Instead, you should clean the outer part of the ears of the dogs with a damp cloth every now and then, and let the dog groomer do the cleaning of the ear canal every month or so.

Teeth brushing is a fundamental aspect of grooming that has to be carried out on a daily basis. Cava Poos are also prone to bad dental hygiene and other dental complications if they are not brushed regularly. Cava Poos are prone to bad mouth odor, gum diseases, and other dental complications that are considered nasty. It is recommended that you use vet-approved dog toothpaste and a dog-specific toothbrush when brushing your Cava Poos’ teeth.

As always, don’t forget that grooming and training go hand in hand! Teaching your puppy to be comfortable with being held, inspected, and handled, and giving your puppy sufficient time to get comfortable with the tools before your first attempt at grooming your puppy or giving your adult Cavapoo a bath, will ensure that you have an easier time grooming your puppy in the future!

Exercise Needs

The Cavadoo breed is moderately active. These amazing dogs love playing dog games and getting cuddles. They are very relaxed. A 30-minute walk every day, along with some indoor play, is all this dog needs to remain healthy and happy. Daily mental stimulation is a must for this pup.

Health

Generally speaking, Cava Poos are healthy dogs. This is due to good breeders and the hybrid vigor of these dogs. First-generation Cava Poos are unlikely to acquire any health condition their parents are susceptible to. Hybrid or crossbreeding of dogs of different breeds but purebred stock ensures healthy and hardy puppies are born.

While it is not likely for Cava Poos to acquire any of these health issues, their parents are susceptible to cataracts, allergies, and weight problems.

What is Cataracts? Cataracts is a health condition that usually occurs in senior dogs. Some of the causes of Cataracts in dogs include injury to the eyes, inflammation, and sugar diabetes. Cataracts is not life-threatening but is painful and causes blindness. It may also lead to Glaucoma if not treated. Symptoms of Cataracts in dogs include discolored eyes, dizziness, cloudy eyes, drowsiness, blinking of eyes, and clumsy movements.

Dog allergies are similar to human allergies. There are environmental, food, and skin allergies. Allergies to dogs manifest themselves by causing irritation to the skin of the dog, itchiness, sneeze fits, inflammation, hives, vomiting, and diarrhea. It is best left to your veterinarian to diagnose the cause of your Cavapoo’s allergies and treat them accordingly. Cavapoos are not known to be affected by dog allergies. However, their parent breeds are likely to be affected by allergies.

Cavapoos are likely to gain weight if they are overindulged with their favorite food. It is essential to ensure that their exercise needs are met to ensure that they do not gain weight.

Lifespan

The lifespan of a Cavapoo is 12-15 years. Like all other breeds of dogs, despite their small or large size, a healthy diet for your Cavapoo along with a healthy amount of exercises and checkups with a vet will surely increase their lifespan.

Training

These are easy to train, and they enjoy every minute of attention during training sessions. However, it should be ensured that they are not bored during training sessions, and hence proper motivation should be provided. Cavapoo puppies should be offered delicious food items, toys, praise, and play during training sessions, and this will work wonders for them. Sometimes, housebreaking and leash training may be a difficult task, but with proper motivation, the puppy will become an eager and obedient student.

Our Cavadoo breeders, as well as our Puppy Agents, have regular interaction with the puppies, and this lays down the groundwork for further socialization of the puppies when they reach their new homes. Socialization is one of the most important steps in training a puppy, and this helps puppies become friendly and sociable adult dogs. These are friendly-natured puppies, and hence, they make fast friends with other puppies and even cats, but they should be socialized properly from an early age.

It is essential to train your Cavapoo from an early stage. If you are a first-time puppy trainer, there are some useful guidelines on early training practices for Cavapoo puppy behaviors.

When it comes to puppy socialization, it is not advisable to rush the process, especially during the first few days of the puppy’s arrival. Your little puppy needs some time to get comfortable with its new surroundings and its owner. After some days, when your puppy is comfortable with its surroundings, you can introduce it to friends and family members.

When your puppy is about 12 weeks old and has finished all the shots it needs, you can start socialization training outside with your puppy around other dogs and people for your friendly puppy to meet and play with. It is recommended that you are patient and don’t push your puppy to socialize if it does not want to. When your puppy does not seem comfortable meeting or playing with another dog, it is recommended that you stop the socialization session and try again on your next walk with your puppy.

Socializing a Cavipoo is easy since they are friendly and social dogs. They are also independent and don’t need to be taken everywhere with you since they can stay alone at home for a longer period of time since they don’t have separation anxiety.

History

The Cavapoo is a designer puppy, a cross between a Cavalier King Charles spaniel and a toy or miniature poodle.

The first breeders who crossed a purebred Cavalier King Charles spaniel with a toy or miniature poodle were said to have come from Australia. While the exact year when Cavadoo puppies were first produced is not known, it is believed that the breed might have started between 1990 and 1995. During these years, the demand and popularity for the breed were said to have been at the peak in Australia and the United States.

Just like the Cockapoos and Goldendoodles, the Cavadoos were made to showcase the best of two breeds. The main difference between regular crossbreeds and designer dogs like the Cava-doodle can be understood by looking at their origins.

Crossbreeds can be traced back to the early 14th century, during which several dog breeds that we know today were still being developed. During this time, crossbreeds were produced through six or more generations, following which the desired outcome was achieved. The primary objective behind crossbreeding during this time was the production of dog breeds that were well equipped for certain jobs.

Most of the larger dog breeds that we know today were the outcome of crossbreeding, which was carried out for jobs such as hunting, herding, retrieving, assisting, guiding, and many more. The outcome of the union of the strengths, expertise, and physical attributes of two different dog breeds was the production of a breed that was well equipped for a particular task. Some of the crossbreeds produced during this time, which were recognized as purebred breeds, include the English Pointer, Bull Terrier, and Greyhounds.

Designer breeds, however, started in 1950 and were bred to have a well-balanced temperament, good coat qualities, a unique appearance due to the qualities of two distinct breeds, and a smaller and more manageable size. Unlike other bigger breeds of dogs that are crossed for working purposes, designer breeds are crossed for their smaller and more manageable size to suit an apartment lifestyle and hypoallergenic purposes to allow these breeds to be owned risk-free by people suffering from allergies.

Doodle breeds such as Cava-doodle are crossbreeds of a Poodle and another purebred breed of dog and are bred to acquire the hypoallergenic qualities of the Poodle along with its intelligence and other desirable qualities of the other breed of dog. Like all other doodle breeds, Cavapoos are also bred to multiple generations to acquire certain desirable qualities.

For example, an F1, which we recognize as a first-generation Cava-poo and which is a cross between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Miniature or Toy Poodle, is healthier than its purebred parents due to hybrid vigor. The F1b, which is the second generation of Cava-poo and which is a cross between an adult Cava-doodle and a Miniature or Toy Poodle, gets 75 percent of the Poodle’s curly coat and hypoallergenic characteristics.

As the breeders succeeded in their journey to develop a new breed of dog, the doodle dog immediately became the favorite dog in both Australia and the United States. No sooner had the popularity of the puppies skyrocketed than the breeders took up the task of creating yet another hybrid dog, named the Cavapoochon, comprising the breed of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, the Miniature Poodle, and the Bichon Frise. As the designer breed proved to be one of the most remarkable breeds, the breeders also started working on different sizes of the doodle dog, among which the most popular ones include:

  • Mini
  • Toy
  • Teacup
  • F1
  • F1B

While the exact origins of the Cavoodle are still unknown, we can look at the history of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Poodle breeds to gain a better knowledge of the Doodle dog breed.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, a popular breed among royal and aristocratic classes for many centuries, is said to have been associated with a life of luxury and opulence. In fact, such was the fascination of King Charles I for the small breed of dogs that the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is named after him. Being of a gentle and docile nature, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is also referred to as the “Spaniel Gentle”.

The Poodle, a beautiful and versatile dog breed, is one of the most ancient breeds in the world. From their role as a duck hunter in Germany to their current role as the most adored contestant in the dog show ring and champion of dog sports, the Poodle is a beautiful and versatile dog breed. Their proud demeanor and elegant looks and their affectionate nature have given the Poodles a life of luxury among kings and queens. Brilliant, loyal, and adoring, the Poodle is ranked as the second most intelligent breed in the world and is now one of the most popular breeds in the world.

Because of its status as a mixed breed, the Cavapoo breed has not yet been recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC). However, the breed has already been recognized by some of the kennel clubs of hybrid and crossbreed dogs. These are the Designer Breed Registry (DBR), the Dog Registry of America (DRA), the Designer Dog Kennel Club (DDKC), the International Designer Canine Registry (IDCR), and the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC).
